Sales data

Sell-out and sell-in are complementary views of sales. The main difference is whether the destination is known and relevant to planning.

Source What is identified Example
Sell-out The selling location. Identifying the final destination is not relevant or possible. A consumer sale at a store without identifying the individual consumer.
Sell-in Both origin and destination. A sale from a plant or distribution center to an identified customer or distributor.

Path in the platform

  • Sell-out: Data > Data Operations > Transactional Data > Sales / Inventory > Historical Sales > Sales / Sell-out
  • Sell-in: Data > Data Operations > Transactional Data > Sales / Inventory > Historical Sales > Sales / Sell-in

Both sources can coexist

A supplier may record as sell-in the sale from its plant or distribution center to a distributor. In collaborative planning, the distributor may share its own sell-out and inventory. The sell-out forecast, combined with current and projected distributor inventory, supports the future sell-in projection required for replenishment.

The sources may also be separated by channel. Because they represent different points in the flow, they should not be added without separating their scopes.

The Demand Planning Execution Profile uses the Sales History Source to select the history for each planning scope.
